What it is

Defects in ear structure can either be present from birth or caused by trauma. In either case, otoplasty, more commonly known as ear pinning surgery, can help correct these defects by improving the proportion, position and/or shape of the ears. In doing so, balance and proportion are restored. In order to perform ear surgery, a small incision is made behind the ear and sutures are placed to shape and hold the cartilage in place.

Otoplasty can correct:

  • Protruding ears

  • Macrotia (overly large ears)

Options

Ear surgery is most commonly performed on its own. However, it can be combined with other day surgeries.

Approximate duration of surgery

1.5 hours

Anesthesia

Otoplasty is often performed under local anesthesia but can also be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. It is best to consult with Dr Rizis in order to establish the best technique for your surgery.

Post-Op Care

Otoplasty is a day surgery. You will therefore be home on the first night and for the remainder of your recovery. Dr Rizis will see you within the first 3 to 5 days to remove bandages and to assess your scars. Recovery continues for a few weeks until the swelling has significantly subsided. Most patients resume normal activities such as work, driving, showering and exercise within the first 7 to 10 days.

Potential Risks & Complications

Although unlikely, all surgical procedures pose potential health risks. During the pre-operative consultation, Dr Rizis will go over all possible risks and complications as well as pertinent procedure information.
